It depends how much you are willing to spend. Just because your warranty expired with Nintendo, you can always get it repaired through them still. It CA its usually around $90 with all taxes and shipping to get it fixed through them, but that does give you a new 1 year warranty, and you can always haggle them down (if you are angry/upset enough it can be pushed to $0). There is a repair location in Chatsworth, so if you want to drive an hour, you can take it there and save the $10 for shipping, or just ship it in and it will only take like.. 1 or 2 weeks. Weren't the previous answers enough? Why not visit the campus? Take a tour, they will address your concerns. I don't live in Carson, but I've driven enough around the University to know that it's not Beverly Hills, but it's not Compton, either. (Incidentally, there are some nice parts of Compton). I think at this point, you need to go look for yourself. You're a big girl now. I don't anything we can say should cause you to lose any sleep or allay your fears. Carson is a lot like Long Beach, and the University around it. Mostly working-class homes, nothing too scary, with a diverse ethnic population. End of story. Go. Study. Learn. Graduate. Good luck!
