In terms of safety; it really depends on the area; e.g. are you going to walk alono at night in the townships (informal settlements)? are you going to chose to walk down an empty road with no lights alone (which there are not many in CT)? well if you have answered yes to these, you could possibly get robbed etc, but give me one place in the world where this would not happen- exactly, you cant. We hosting the FIFA 2010 World Cup, one of the biggest sporting spectaculars in the world; If SA was so bad, why would we have been selected to host? why would the online ticketing service for the 2010 WC crash for the first time in FIFA history, the day it became accessible? TRUTH is, is that SA is not half as bad as people think. We are Africa's leading nation, Cape Town voted in the "2008,2009 Top City's list" So what should you expect? the same things that i have heard endless times by tourists, that SA and CT is nothing like what they had read about, that they enjoyed their stay, and according to a statistic 82% of visitors to the Cape said they would return, 10% said they would not visit again, and the 8% said they were not sure. When I lived in Redondo Beach, I would get Golden garden spiders in the back yard from time to time. typically only as big as your hand. The little orange orb weavers rarely got over two inches long overall. No, none of the orb weavers are harmful at all. Their webs are a bit of a nuisance on the porch, but I just ignore them.
